Formatting for CMS

Hacker: The Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) Formatting

When formatting for Chicago Manual Of Style (CMS) the writer follows easy steps and guidelines.

1)       Title page – The writer needs to include “the full title of your paper, your name, the course title, the instructor’s name, and the date.” [1] The writer should not number the title page but when starting on the next page it will be numbered 2.

2)      Pagination- All pages are to be numbered in the upper right hand corner. Also, the writers last name may appear before each number.

3)      Margins and Line spacing – One inch margins on the top, bottom, and both sides. The whole paper should be double spaced.

4)      Long Quations – When the writer has a long quation (more than 5 lines) it should be set off by a ½ inch indent from left margin. When an author does this they do not need to incorporate quation marks.

5)      Visuals – Always keep very simple. Keep the visuals numbered and titled. Also give a short description to what they are with their source included.

Preparing endnotes with the CMS the writer needs to have a separte page. The endnotes should be centered one inch from top of page.

1)       Indenting and Numbering – Indent each first line ½ inch from the left margin and then with the corresponding number in the text use that number for the endnote.

2)      Line Spacing – All notes should be single spaced with a double space inbetween.

When preparing the bibliograpy for CMS it will follow the endnotes. The title “Bibliogoraphy” will be centered.

1)       Alphabetizing the List – The bibliography should have all the sources (authors) last names in alphabetical order.

2)      Indenting and Line spacing – Begin at the left margin and if there are more lines they should be indented ½ inch. In between all the sources there should be a double space.

The Purdue Owl: The Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) Formatting

The Purdue Owl gives two different ways to document in CMS: 1) Notes-Bibliography system (NB) and 2) Author-Date system.  NB is used more with the arts and literature where as the second, Author-Date system is used in the sciences.  By using these systems it is to help the writer from committing the dangerous error of PLAGIRISM! The two ways that it protects the writer is with footnotes and endnotes.  Footnotes being at the end of the page and endnotes at the end of the paper before the bibliography. The way the writer cites their sources in document is with superscript (which is IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!) at the end of the sentece that they are citing.  When compiling all the information for the bibliography the writer needs to put all authors in alphabetical order if the source does not have an author the writer the will put that source as the next item in the list but not using an article.  The bibliography is to be at the end of work and will cite all sources.  It can even cite sources that are in the reading but the writer may feel helpful! Imagine that!  When using the CMS all titles are to be italicized.  The publication year is after the author’s name and “in a bibliograrphy all major elements are separted by a period.”[2]
